When my daughter turned three, getting her dressed in the morning started to become a nightmare. She wanted to start having a say in what I was picking and she would fight me on anything I suggested. What happened to my little girl that would let me dress her up in super cute outfits? Now I had a preschooler that wanted to make her own decisions. The problem was that she seemed to only want to pick out either pieces that completely clashed in color (ie. a red bottom and orange top, yikes!), or she would choose a top and a bottom with completely different patterns that didn’t match at all. It was like I was walking around with someone from the circus and it would take her FOREVER to pick things out. Mornings are rushed as it is and this always added to the stress.

A couple of weekends ago I magically found myself with a couple of free hours to myself. I decided to go into my daughter’s room and re-organize her clothes so that we can end these feuding mornings once and for all! The system I came up with has worked so well, I don’t know why I didn’t do this sooner? Here is what I did:

  • I took all her summer clothes out of her drawers and laid them out on the bed.
  • I matched each top with a coordinating bottom until everything was matched up. Any odd pieces of clothing I put in a pile to either sell or give away.
  • I nicely folded each top and bottom and then packed them into a large ziploc bag.
  • I repeated this for every matching outfit.

Here is what I ended up with:

Now my mornings are so much smoother. My daughter wakes up in the morning and just grabs a bag out of her drawer. I don’t have to worry about what she is picking because I matched everything myself. She still feels like she is making her own decision without even realizing that I helped her. I love it!
