Have you noticed one or more of the following:

  • Your baby is always looking to one side?
  • Your baby’s head is tilted and/or turned to one side?
  • Your baby’s head is flattened on one side?

If so, then your baby may have developed a congenital torticollis and/or plagiocephaly.

Congenital torticollis is characterized by unilateral tightening of the sternocleidomastoid muscle, causing your baby’s head to be tilted towards the affected neck muscle. Due to the increased neck tightness, your baby will have difficulty moving and turning his/her head. This is particularly important when your baby is sleeping or playing on his/her back, as increased pressure will be placed on one specific area of his/her head. Babies have very malleable bones at this age, thus with time the increased pressure on his/her skull may flatten your baby’s head. Such a condition is known as plagiocephaly.

If torticollis/plagiocephaly is left untreated, it can in time cause:

  • A delay in your baby’s overall motor development;
  • Cranial and facial deformation;
  • The development of asymmetric movements;
  • Decreased neck mobility;
  • Difficulties with balance and coordination;

An early consultation with a pediatric physiotherapist offers excellent results in resolving torticollis and/or plagiocephaly and preventing its long term consequences.

Following a detailed evaluation, the pediatric physiotherapist will work with you to correct your baby’s neck mobility, postural alignment and cranial-facial morphology. Treatment for torticollis and/or plagiocephaly is individualized and also strives towards:

  • Encouraging the development of symmetric movements;
  • Optimizing your baby’s overall motor development;
  • Increasing your baby’s comfort through optimal positioning during sleep, play and feedings.
