Spring Has Sprung at the Ecomuseum Zoo: Genie the Black Bear Is Awake!

Spring Has Sprung at the Ecomuseum Zoo: Genie the Black Bear Is Awake!

Spring arrived with a special moment at the Ecomuseum Zoo, and I was lucky enough to witness it firsthand. Genie, the zoo’s beloved resident black bear, has officially emerged from hibernation—and what an entrance she made.

A Long Winter’s Rest Comes to an End

After settling into hibernation back in November, Genie has been slowly showing signs of waking over the past few days. This morning, she finally stepped out of her den and into her outdoor habitat, ready to greet the warmer weather.

Her first order of business? Food—lots of it.
Genie wasted no time digging into the fruits and veggies scattered around her yard. Some treats were tucked inside cardboard boxes, which she happily tore apart with impressive strength and enthusiasm. Watching her forage, explore, and snack her way through the morning was a beautiful reminder of how lively and curious she is.

Celebrating Genie’s 15th Year

This spring is extra special for Genie as she celebrates her 15th birthday. Born on February 1, 2011, under professional human care, she joined the Ecomuseum Zoo in 2014. For several years, she shared her habitat with Juno, another black bear. Since Juno’s passing, Genie has embraced a more solitary lifestyle—something quite natural for many black bears in the wild.

Seeing her move confidently through her space, healthy and full of energy, was truly heartwarming. She is a stunning animal, and her presence alone draws you in.

A Morning to Remember

I captured some wonderful photos during this special moment, and I can’t wait to share them. A huge thank‑you to the Ecomuseum Zoo for inviting me to be part of Genie’s big day. It was a privilege to witness her first steps into spring. As well as some other beautiful wildlife around the zoo.

If you’re looking for a magical, educational, and family‑friendly outing this season, the Ecomuseum Zoo is the perfect place to experience the beauty of local wildlife up close.
